The magical, kinetic flower awakens

Faerie Bloom is an immersive, interactive art installation that invites participants into a world of wonder, play, and collaboration. Powered by three see-saws, a childhood favourite reimagined, this giant bio-mechanical flower comes to life through human movement and shared play.

As participants ride the see-saws, the flower responds with dramatic, graceful motion. Its large petals unfurl and sway while the central pistil and six stemens move and rotate, creating a mesmerising kinetic spectacle driven entirely by human energy.

At the heart of the work, the traditional see-saw fulcrum is replaced by negative space, forming an optical illusion that appears to defy gravity and invites curiosity about how the mechanism works.

The sculptural form combines steel structure with soft, tactile materials, textiles, and light. This layered material approach softens the mechanical presence of the work to creates an inviting, organic aesthetic suited to public interaction across regional Victoria.

Inside the flower, holographic and refractive materials interact with natural lighting to create a shifting kaleidoscope of colour. A translucent reflector dome crowns the pistil, wrapped in flowing dichroic streamers that refract light and amplify movement. As night falls, battery-powered internal lighting brings the sculpture alive, drawing audiences in from a distance.

Six specialised petals form the see-saw arms that feature padded seating to prioritise comfort, inclusivity, and safety for a wide range of participants.

Curved handlebars are wrapped in colourful grips and highlighted with integrated lighting, ensuring the sculpture’s scale and moving elements remain clearly visible while enhancing the sense of play and delight.

Faerie Bloom is a joyful, physically engaging artwork that celebrates collective movement, curiosity, and shared experience, inviting audiences of all ages to play together and bring the flower to life.
